So, we gave our most recent broody hen eight fresh eggs to sit on. That was 5/13/10. Today, I went out to check on her, and she was dead on the coop floor. She probably starved or dehydrated. We tried so hard to get her to eat or drink, get off the next, but to no avail. I’ve read that broodies can get like this; so devoted to their purpose that they starve. I just never thought it would happen to one of our fickle broodies, who seem to change their mind when the winds blow. This time, we had left her in the coop, because any previous attempts to move her were disastrous. So she was happily sitting on eight eggs right in the coop, in the nest box that no one else layed eggs in. I shoved her aside in the milk crate (using a broom) and removed the decoy plastic Easter eggs, and replaced them with those eight fresh eggs. She sat right back down on them. So far, so good. I tossed food into her nest box whenever I went out, and tried to get her to get up and drink after the other hens had left the coop to range for the evening. But she wouldn’t. I thought it would take longer for her to keel over, and I didn’t really think she was starving. Six days later, she’s dead.
This was our fourth attempt at hatching chicks with a broody mom, and both our most and least successful. I’m so sad that she’s gone, and that we won’t have babies. Boo.
